St. Valentine’s Day at Pizzetteria Brunetti in the West Village was a real blast. In addition to our fantastic pizza, wine and special Valentine’s Day menu, we had lots of fun with our wonderful guests, especially those who participated in our first ever “Naked Wine Tasting.”
“No you don’t have to take your clothes off,” I told our guests. And while some breathed a sigh of relief, others expressed disappointment. “The reason why we call it naked,” I explained, “is because the wine label will be removed leaving the bottle ‘naked.’”
Players were given vintage St. Valentine’s Day cards with a selection of nine wines on the back. We then poured three different tasting’s from our wonderful Italian wine selection. After tasting the wine, the player would then choose three wines they think they had tasted.
Most of the players did very well. Out of the 27 who played, four picked the correct three wines. I was very impressed at how well everybody did. I know the wines and I’m not sure I could have got it right!
The four then had their names go into a drawing for the chance of winning $50 towards their bill. A winner was picked and the players who did not win the drawing were treated to dessert on the house.
Our Naked Wines
# 1 – Dal Cero – Podere Bianchino Chardonnay 2012 IGT
This wine offers on the nose delicate and fresh scents of citrus together with peach and pear. On the palate, it is fresh, medium bodied, pleasantly acid, and with a persistent and long finish.
I believe due to the buttery quality and richness of this wonderful wine most players were surprised by this chardonnay.
# 2- Soave Classico Superiore DOC Pieropan, Veneto, 2012
Brilliant straw yellow color with greenish hints; the delicate nose is reminiscent of almond blossoms and marzipan; good depth of fruit on the palate, nicely balanced by a zingy acidity that enhances its long length
I thought for sure the shape of the bottle would give away this excellent aperitif
# 3-Brunello di Montalcino Mocali, Tuscany, 2008
Intense ruby red in color, this Brunello has a complex and balanced nose, showing aromas of raspberries and liquorice with notes of chocolate and spice, varying from vanilla to cinnamon to coffee. Warm and full on the palate, the flavors are beautifully pronounced with excellent length.
Before I poured this amazing Brunello I would say, I’m going to give you a hint…. it’s a red. Always got a laugh!
We at the Brunetti family love our guests and consider it an honor that they choose to come out to eat with us when they could go anywhere else in this great city.
